Why Antalya, why now
About the meeting
Trade Unions for Energy Democracy (TUED) is convening a three-day Inter-Regional Meeting of unions during COP31 in Antalya, Türkiye. The meeting will coincide with the People's Climate Summit, whose goals — building energy democracy in all its forms and advancing realistic transformative solutions that challenge fossil fuel dependency — align directly with those of the TUED network.
Thirty years after Kyoto and ten years after Paris, annual emissions remain higher than at any point in history. The neoliberal idea that private markets would lead the transition has been discredited, and many “green” policies have only tightened the grip of the financial elite — imposing a “green structural adjustment” agenda on the Global South.
The need for a policy shift toward a public pathway — anchored in public ownership of energy and other vital industries, public financing, and non-commercial international cooperation — has never been more urgent. The Inter-Regional Meeting creates the space for unions, policy allies, and social movements to collectively strengthen that approach.
